Quebec car buyers are more like Europeans... some stats
From an article in the Globe and Mail....
- compact & subcompact car/CUV sales: 61% in Quebec vs. 45.8% Canada-wide.
- import brand compacts (Corolla, Mazda3, Accent, Jetta) in Quebec account for between 47-71% of Canadian sales
- Quebecois "historically buy the least amount of vehicle they can afford", unlike Albertans for example, who buy the most.
- Fiat 500: 43% of its first year sales (5700) were in Quebec
- Hyundai and Nissan top the Quebec market (Hyundai has 29% of its dealers in Quebec)
- The Big 3 domestic brands sell relatively poorly: 50% nationally, but 30% in Quebec (partly because large SUV and pickup truck sales are lower)
- Quebec has the lowest rate of car ownership rate: 1.35 cars/household vs. 1.47 nationally (2009)
Why?
- "less disposable income, higher fuel prices and an urbanized population"
- Quebec City and Montreal have the 2nd and 3rd highest gas prices after Vancouver
- Environmental sustainability is a bigger concern
