Preview: 2015 Nissan Micra - Remarkably priced, but not cheap (Toronto Star/Wheels)

The Toronto Star Wheels section is supposedly the most widely read auto publication in Canada.

They posted a brief rundown of the Micra on their web site last week, and now there's an additional "first drive" report from writer Costa Mouzouris.

This is the only review I've read so far that criticizes the car for excessive body roll.

    Pros...

    - head-turning price
    - hard to notice the cost-cutting from the driver's seat
    - fit & finish better than you'd expect
    - roomy cockpit for 6 foot driver
    - surprisingly smooth & quiet ride... until you demand power

    Cons...

    - engine noise when passing/accelerating hard, particularly the automatic
    - excessive body roll at speed, but not "sloppy"
    - electric assisted steering "numb" at lower speeds

    Overall...

With the Micra, you get a new car with a used-car price tag

Its odd how subjective car reviews are. It almost makes them seem... not worth all the effort car companies put into them.

There is no such thing as an objective car review haha objective car reviews can only exist through the specifications of each car, but cars were meant to be accessories, each one is different and different people like cars for different reasons, mehh

Well, I think it's been worth it for Nissan, so far. Aside from the odd complaint (some of which contradict other reviewers' praise admittedly), I'd say the car's general reception has been really positive.

My favourite comment from the article:

Being that the Micra will likely appeal to wallet watchers and not racer wannabes...
Wannabes need not apply; even more reason why I find the Micra so appealing.

In our culture obsessed with absurd excess, the Nissan Micra is my counterculture car of choice.

I actually think we're going to see several groups of Micra fans, including wallet watchers and performance enthusiasts.

$10k is cheap for that power:weight ratio. It's not spectacular, but it leaves lots of coin left over for power/handling upgrades (wheels, tires, suspension, intake, exhaust etc.)

We're already seeing members of both groups here in the forum.

Someone correctly noted that the Micra has plenty of headroom for a racing helmet.

Ah, but note the key word; wannabe. Those who understand the true performance potential of the Micra can hardly be called wannabe's, can they?

    Interesting.
    1) He reports excessive body roll, most reviews say the cornering is fairly flat. Hope he is wrong.
    2) He reports the manual version is quieter on the highway due to lower rpm's, most report the auto revs lower. Hope he is right.

He's the only one to complain about body roll; most have said good things about handling. So I'm saying "wrong!"

He's also wrong about the engine RPM. At 100 km/h, the manual revs @ ~2900; the automatic @ ~2500.
