I have a new 2019 Micra and put 1200 km on it in a couple of weeks. I read somewhere that someone recommended doing the first oil change at 1000km. Is there a need or any wisdom in doing this?

There is no need to do first oil change at 1200 on 2019 micra. Do it at around 8k as per user manual. Idea of changing oil on brand new engine is when engines were filled with breakin oil. But manufacturers were forced to eliminate that so all new cars are coming with normal oil and there is no need to change it sooner than specified in the manual. I wouldnt race the car though but will drive at low to moderate speeds for full break in of transmission and engine.

Thanks for your reply Plutus. The break in advice makes sense, will keep the speeds low for a while and will just change the first oil on schedule, thanks.
Some people think it's beneficial to change the oil to remove any microscopic bits associated with break in that are too small to be trapped by the oil filter. Personally, I've never done an oil change on a new engine with less than 3K miles. 8000kl is approximately 5K miles. I don't think leaving the factory fill in for that period is likely to do any damage but it's your car and you have to make a decision with what you're comfortable with. The OCI for my Versa is listed at 5K miles but the last oil change I let it go 7500 miles. Even at 7500 miles my oil was a dark honey color on the dipstick, nowhere near black. I've drained oil out of other cars in years past with 3K miles on the oil that looked worse than this did at 7500. My vehicles don't get driven extremely hard and probably better than 95% of the time they're run long enough to get the oil up to full operating temperature which would burn off any moisture in the oil. If you do lots of short trip driving (less than 15-20 minutes) you might consider doing earlier oil changes because it may not be getting warm enough to burn off moisture.

I suppose the fact that this vehicle sat for at least 1 if not close to 2 years before being sold as new might affect the oil somewhat. It wouldn't hurt to swap it out earlier other than the added expense.

Most oil manufacturers recommend shelf life of open container 1-2 years. So in the engine for sure it must be changed after a year if not sooner. Im going with km not time when changing oil cos am driving 40-50k a year.
Another thing that's weird is the oil recommendation from Nissan which is for Genuine Nissan 0W-20 Synthetic for 2018 -2019 Micras and Mobil 1TM 5W-30 Synthetic for 2015 - 2017. I've never purchased the 0W-20 synthetic before, usually it's more expensive at the dealership and I wonder if it's really necessary to use "genuine" Nissan oil or if another brand is equally as good. If it affects the warranty I could see good reason to use it but otherwise maybe it's intent is to get vehicles into their service bays to bump up profits finding little things to fix while it's there.

If its still under warranty i would go with 0w20 half a year then 5w30 warmer half. 0w20 is pretty strong oil very resistive to breakdown. But because of our summers getting warmer and warmer each year i would go for 5w30 if its possible but as 0w20 is full synthetic then u have to stick with full synthetic 5w30 as well they both arent cheap compared to conventional oil. But usually its cheaper to replace oil in dealership its around 55-60$ Including oil+filter+drainwasher+carwash which is pretty cheap compared to garages which gonna charge same but without drainwasher change, aftermarket oil filter and whatever brand of oil they have and without carwash of course. So it’s obvious in that case its hard to beat dealership price.
That oil btw is mobil1 in dealerships.

If Nissan does oil changes for $60 with a car wash that's fine with me, I spend at least that anyway at a Jiffy Lube type place. Good advice on the 5W-30 synthetic for summer, I will do that when the good weather comes back around. I'm learning a lot of helpful things on this site and really appreciate the sharing of knowledge, thanks!
I've got a '97 Ford Escort with 41K miles on it that gets an oil change every 5K miles. I think the oil that's in it now has been in it at least 3 years and has less than 2K miles on it. The oil that I'm using it in it has been stored in the original plastic bottles in my garage for about 25 years.
I had an oil burner/leaker back in the 1990's that went through about a qt. every 300-500 miles. Finally I started saving the oil I drained from my better cars when I changed oil in them and using it as topping off oil in the oil burner. When I sold the car it had been over 31K miles since it's last oil change and was still using about the same amount of oil and there was no knocking in the engine. The person who bought it from me drove it about another 2 years before scrapping it because it wouldn't pass emissions testing. The person who bought it knew the car's history but had just got married and needed cheap transportation so I sold it to him for $250. and let him make payments to me as he had the money.
