Keep in mind the battery has to have some juice left in it to be able to bump start it. It has to be able to power the sparkplugs.
I once huffed and puffed to push my dead VW Rabbit up a little hill to roll start it. I had left the lights on .... well, the parking lights and the battery was dead as a doornail. I tried 2 roll start attempts and ... nada. I ended up flagging down a taxi for a jump start - fired right up.
