Rust from the camera hole- solved sorta

So as per the last post my 2015 ALSO had running rust streaks from the camera. We dismantled the hatch today and pulled out the camera, and lo and behold it's a REALLY bad part. There's a metal bracket on the camera (most likely low grade steel) that is not painted properly, and between that, the poor camera affixing to the car (seeing light through between housing and car), salt, and water, it's rusted to ****. This is probably the issue on most cars that have this problem, and isn't too bad to pull apart. My dad and I are gonna try Napa to see if they have a fully plastic alternative, if not then a new part from Nissan and I will update with the price later on, or I may design and 3D print one to fit. Unsure how to add photos with the new site update, so I'll try later once I'm home from work.

It's definitely not pretty, and I would check yours asap. Were uploading a how to dismantle the hatch video on YouTube later.

Another disappointed customer here as Nissan refuses to cover the cost. Love the Micra but Nissan Canada is driving me away from buying another I think.

After we tried to buff off the surface rust:

Thanks for sharing the cause, with pics!

If anybody's going to re-paint rather than replace this part, you really need a 2-part paint to ensure the repair is permanently waterproof.

Personally, I would just use some epoxy, since the repair will be hidden once re-assembled.

Im still awaiting a response for the cost of a new one. Best bet would to buy a new non rusted one then epoxy that to prevent more internal rust under the epoxy.

Yup, mine has started to show signs of rust there. Another project to tackle sometime this summer.

You'd think Nissan would recall this part smh. It's definitely defective.

If there is no rust showing, why not run a bead of silicone around the plastic camera cover to stop this....comments??

    Ounce of prevention!

Sounds like a very good idea to me.

Wouldn't that promote any existing rust to spread to the rear hatch?

Wayward One, yes your right would not want to leave the rust behind but if you cleaned up the rust or replaced the rusty metal piece then sealing up the camera with a colour matching silicone should stop this problem in the future.

If the sealant keeps water out, any existing rust won't progress significantly more.
