Nerd alert! I love me some charts.

Here's something I've been wondering about since the Micra arrived in Canada. And that something is: how has the Micra affected sales of Nissan's other small cars?

(It's something we've touched on a bit in the Micra monthly sales thread already. )

Here for your edutainment and digestion are two charts showing sales of the Versa vs. Sentra vs. Micra. One chart shows sales by volume, the other by relative percentage (what % each model makes up of total sales).

    Sales numbers from: http://goodcarbadcar.net/

What do you think: Micra good little angel? Or Micra devilish little cannibal?

    Notes:

    1) The Note hatchback went on sale alongside the sedan in June, 2013.

    2) Nissan's Versa sales numbers don't distinguish between the sedan and Note hatchback in either Canada or the U.S. But the cancellation of the slow-selling Versa sedan in Canada was announced in Feb., 2014 when plans for the Canadian Micra were revealed. So, it's safe to assume the Note represents almost all of the Versa sales by now.

    3) The current generation Sentra went on sale in October, 2012.

Very interesting (maybe I'm a nerd too, haha). Sales are definitely up in total, but Versa sales to appear to be down, though not hugely.

I dunno, that looks like a pretty big drop to me (Versa numbers).

But you're right: overall, small car numbers are up in every month since the Micra came out vs. the same month a year ago.

Micra: The car they should've brought back in the first place instead of introducing the Versa.

In our culture obsessed with absurd excess, the Nissan Micra is my counterculture car of choice.

The big question: area they making as much money overall as they were before Micra sales started eating away at Versa sales? I bet there's more profit in a Note than a Micra, so I wonder if it's still a net gain... something only Nissan knows at this point.

Depends on the model. I think the base S manual model makes Nissan little to negative profit. The big jump in price from S to S w/ auto shows what they actually needed to make a profit. The sub 10k price was to grab attention in hopes that the average buyer isn't going to want a base manual model (I sure did!).

Added some notes to post #1: dates that the new Sentra & Note went on sale and the cancellation of the Versa sedan in Canada was announced. Gives the charts a bit more context.
