    LED light upgrade

The days are getting shorter, which has made me increasingly aware of just how pathetic the little yellow dome light is in my Micra, so today I decided to do something about it.

The direct LED replacement for this bulb is a T10 LED; I picked up a two pack from Canadian Tire for $19.99. The difference is quite significant in the dark.

The license plate light uses the same bulb, so I put the extra one there.

The parking and side marker lights use the same bulb, I may upgrade those to LED as they burn out.

I did the boot light today. It takes a very small Festoon style light, around 28mm or so, which is why it's so pathetically dim. I managed to squeeze in a Philips 30mm festoon LED light I bought from Canadian Tire for $12.99. A worthwhile upgrade for sure!

Those look like they make a big difference.

    Added to the modifications/customizations list.

It's a huge difference. The package states 5 times brightness, and it's not an exaggeration. Perhaps it's because the stock lights are so pathetic; I mean, we have a single bloody license plate light as our only interior light! I used to have to use a flashlight at night to find things in my car. The new boot light lights up the entire boot, and the front interior is finally adequately lit, almost as good as daylight.

I'm going to have to look into this for my car.

Oh, and bonus: if you forget to shut off the light at night (as I've done several times), the LED probably draws way less power. Might not kill the battery.

I've noticed that the Micra tends to turn lights off automatically if they've been left on too long, but drawing less power means there's room to add on to these circuits. The package doesn't state how much current these draw, so I'll still have to stick my meter on these circuits before adding on to them.

EDIT: One other thing: These LEDs are polarized, which means if they're plugged in the wrong way, they don't work. If you get one and it doesn't work, try turning it around.

Well, the car I was thinking about doing this for (Firefly) was built in the last century, so it doesn't have any of that fancy auto-light-turning-off fanciness.
