    I'd say that's not related. It's a perfect description of pre-ignition/detonation.

Solution: kick the pedal harder so it downshifts.

Or use a higher octane fuel.

    Or... ? Google search!

Here's something to look up: does the HR16DE have a knock sensor? If it does, it should pull timing back when it detects ping, so it shouldn't do it for long.

Wanted to add some data: one of the cylinders in my 2015 SV (manual) was defective. My check-engine light came on (a week before the 3-year bumper-to-bumper warranty was up) and they replaced the engine. The car had always idled high and I hadn't thought anything of it, but it's now running ~400rpm lower with the new goer in it.

No other running/drivability issues than the idle RPM?

It did mean I clutched more in traffic, as I couldn't creep along in first as easily or I'd stall. But otherwise, not really, no. And the dealership was stumped for awhile, too, it took them a week to diagnose... the only symptom was the check engine light, but that was after 3 years. They did say they think the engine was a lemon from the day it was built, not something that happened later.

(...it took then another week to get approval to replace the engine, and then a few weeks to get one ... so I got to drive a nice automatic 2016 Micra for a few months instead, which was quite fun! I may rethink driving standard after this car.)

Thanks for the update. Do you recall exactly what the failure was? Sounds like it wasn't bearing-related if you had no knocking noise.

I don't know why they would deny doing work if it's required, unless the dealership doesn't want/need the work. Nissan pays the dealer for warranty repairs (though at a reduced rate compared to "retail customers").

When are you going to take it in?

I'd bring notes about the owners who posted in this thread that got warrantied engine replacements after doing the same RPM/knock test.

    Keep us posted!
