Just for reference, my last car was a 2002 Grand Am GT. I used GM's "Oil life monitor" system, which had me changing the oil well beyond 5,000km intervals. If any engine would have been hurt by longer periods between oil changes, this iron block, aluminum head, pushrod V6 that was wound out to redline a lot during its life would have been it. I always changed the oil when the "Change oil" light came on, never before. When I got rid of it, it had around 215,000km. The engine ran perfect with no unusual sounds. It didn't burn oil, I didn't have to add oil between changes, and it ran clean. It passed drive clean last October with excellent numbers. I got rid of it because it had other issues that were not related to the engine. I believe the engine would have been the last thing to fail.

Our Micra is at the Nissan dealer getting it's first oil change right now...at the recommended 8,000km's. I normally do my own changes but for $40 bucks they even wash the car so it's not really worth saving the $10-$15 doing it myself.

If I had gone with a Motomaster oil filter at $3.97 and cheap bulk 5W30 oil on sale at $3.97 per liter, adding in the price of the crush washer, each equivalent dealer oil change costs me $18.86, so that's a savings of $21.14. I can perform a complete oil change in my Micra in 10 minutes (as long as I'm not shooting a video of me doing it), so until I'm able to earn over $126 per hour working on a Sunday afternoon (a time that's most convenient for me), it's definitely worth it for me to change my own oil and do my own car wash after. It's also more fun and more satisfying.

Just wanted to share the fact that Costco is currently selling my favourite brand of oil - Castrol GTX - for $39.96 for a case of 12 one litre bottles. That works out to $3.33 per litre of oil. That puts the cost of oil for an oil change at $11.66 before tax. This was the oil I used in my original 1990 Micra; I found it tended to keep an oil-like viscocity (doing the oil rub between the fingers test) better at oil change time than other similar priced oils, and kept my engine running strong and clean.
