On the inner side of each brake rotor there is a splash shield to protect the rotors while driving. As your rotors age with rust, they'll expand and start rubbing on the splash shields, and different turns and speeds seems to affect the rubbing. You could replace your rotors to fix this issue, or try bending the splash shields away to stop them rubbing.

Or it could be something else entirely good luck!

Im almost embarrassed to say......(shuffles feet)......I wondered if the hard OEM all weather Nissan Micra floor mats might be the problem.....I had to do a shake out of the mats and a vacuum of the carpets underneath last month, and after cleaning the carpets I secured the all weather mat in place with the little nub sticking up from the floor, and have made sure that the all weather mat and carpeted mat is in proper place since that time.....result?.....no more "gronching" or "popping" noises. I suspect the all weather mat was riding up in the footwell, and that the steering column was rubbing against the mat......Ive heard nary a peep since securing the mat properly......I thank everyone for their advice and suggestions, and will keep everyone apprised if the noise returns.....

We had the Nissan OEM Micra rubber floor mats and at the car wash the centers blew out. Toss them and got a front set of Weathertech. While I am not a fan of the surface being a bit slippy, they cover better and don't desegregate.
Glad it was a cheap solution.
