    60,000 KM Front Brake Job

My 2016 Micra just hit 60,000 kms & on my last oil change/service visit it was noted my front brake pads
were down to 3 mm & rotors are rusty. I didn't know this until watching a youtube video that those grooves in the
center of the pad indicate wear, I think the groove indicates 2mm left when its' gone.
I did my own inspection & found the outer passenger side was @ 3mm the rest closer to 5mm.
I has also noticed a bit of grinding noise & "grabby" when coming to a complete stop so decided to replace.
I checked Canadian tire & a single coated rotor was about 73$ each (not on sale)
RockAuto has been mentioned on this forum so I checked it out.
They only had the economy non-coated rotor kit & ceramic pads for 40$!
Seemed too good to be true, turns out US $ & shipping extra.
I selected the coated rotors kit & it only took a few days to be available
Total price to BC with taxes & shipping 98$ Canadian.
Id say the install went well as the rotors were not rusted to the hubs.
The inner surface of each rotor had uneven wear pattern/rings possibly caused by the rust cutting away the pad.
Braking is excellent & smooth now.
It should mentioned the dealer quoted around 500$ for the same service.
I already had the copper anti-seize compound & brake grease which is not cheap but should be used.

Just an update, I had a look at the old inside brake pad with a straight edge & there is missing material on the outer & inner edge of the pad caused by the rust on the rotor.
If anything the appearance of the shiny new rotor through the alloy wheel has improved at least.

Nice work. So, $200 DIY instead of $500 at the dealer?

My cost was under 100$ as I already had the tools. Brake grease, copper anti-seize, mechanics mallet & a big C clamp to compress the pistons under 200$ for sure.

I'm at 280,000km and still no need to touch my brakes. They are down about 35% since I bought the car new in 2015. I've had it checked out by the dealership, Discount Tire and Canadian Tire, they all told me my brakes were in good shape

Aytononline - what part of the country do you live in?

One of the worst things for brake rotors is for the car to be driven INfrequently in a region where the climate promotes rust (and/or where they salt the roads). If the car sits for long periods, once the corrosion on the rotors gets past a certain point, the pads can't scrub the surface clean again. It's even worse if you're a gentle braker.

Well done. I use Rock Auto as well as they include duties and taxes when shipping to Canada. All you have to watch is shipping as some distributors charge big bucks to Canada. My wife's Micra which is our city car has not needed brakes yet at 79,000K on it thus far. Great car. ( 2015 SV automatic).

I drive mostly in the Toronto Area on the 401. I average about 110km a day. Plus weekend trips.
