Micra to be replaced by new Versa sedan in Nissan Canada's line-up

Nissan Canada has just revealed their plan to fill the entry level slot in their vehicle line-up after cancelling the Micra. (Related thread: Crap! Micra cancelled in Canada. Again. 2019 is the last model year.)

You're looking at the 2021 Nissan Versa sedan.

The return of the Versa sedan is pretty ironic, considering "lack of interest in small sedans" was given as the main reason it was dropped and replaced by the hatchback Micra back in 2014. (See 2014 thread: Nissan cancelling Versa sedan in favour of $10,000 Micra) Suddenly Canadians want small sedans instead of practical little hatchbacks?

Also ironic: the new Versa sedan shares a platform with the K14 Micra, which is not currently available in the western hemisphere.

Pricing of the Versa hasn't been announced yet, but you can bet there will not be a base S version starting at $9998. But considering the cheapest Kicks is over $20k with the mandatory delivery charge, they gotta slot something beneath it.

    More info from Nissan Canada:

    • 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine @ 122 horsepower and 114 lb-ft of torque (same as the Kicks?)
    • Transmissions: CVT Xtronic transmission or a 5-speed manual.
    • Launch will be in late-summer of 2020 as 2021 model.
    • Available safety features not usually found in the segment: Nissan Safety Shield 360 = front, side and rear safety monitoring and intervention
    • Standard safety features include: Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Intelligent Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning and High Beam Assist.
    • Available features: Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross traffic Alert.
    • Will be produced in the same Mexican factory that produced our K13 Micra

Fuel economy hasn't been revealed yet, but it'll almost certainly be the same as the US model:

    2021 Nissan Versa fuel economy:

    5-speed Manual
    (MPG US ... L / 100 km)
    CVT automatic
    (MPG US ... L / 100 km)
    City 27 = 8.7 32 = 7.4
    Highway
    35 = 6.7 40 = 5.9
    Combined 30 = 7.8 35 = 6.7

Compare that to the 2019 Micra:

    • 8.7 city / 6.8 highway (manual transmission)
    • 8.9 city / 6.8 highway (automatic)

Compare that to the Kicks (CVT only):

    • 7.7 city / 6.6 highway

So what will happen with the Micra Cup? I thought that was a great way to sell Micras.

    That's a good question.

I read an article yesterday that asked the same thing. It said that Nissan is fully behind the idea of a series -- it's great bang for the marketing buck -- a Nissan rep says the entire series cost less than making 1 TV commercial. They hinted that we may see another model take its place... Versa Cup? Leaf Cup?

    Here it is: https://driving.ca/nissan/features/f...s-final-season

I think it is a big mistake to cancel the Micra. Nissan seems to introduce cars way too frequently, and cancel them just as quickly. I wouldn't get a Versa to replace my Micra.... I'd go over to Honda and check out the Fit (had one before - loved it).

I had a 2007 Fit --- until I got my Micra in 2015, because it was several thousands of dollars less. I loved it. But maybe things have gone downhill at Honda, like everywhere else.

I'm probably just going to keep this one (I have very low mileage) until it is easier to buy an electric vehicle sometime in the future.

    ^ This.
I'm keeping my Micra for another 2 years-ish and then I'll probably trade it in for a Tesla Model Y. I figure they'll have it fully sorted at that point and battery capacity increasing incredibly fast and charging times are dropping, although at 500km it's already got more range than my Micra. Sad to see the Micra go though. Maybe they'll bring the K14 Micra over in a year or two...

With the Mexico-built Versa sedan being based on the K14 platform, I figure it's just a matter of time before they switch to producing the K14 Micra/March hatchback down there.

Whether they'll bring it here is another question.

Nissan is making some mistakes. Sounds like the accountants are running the place. The Micra/Marsh still sells. They should return it with the Marsh name and toss the NA only Micra name.

The first Canadian Versa reviews are coming in, and the ones I've seen are positive. Then again, so were ALL of the Micra reviews!
