Speculation: Micra may be cancelled in Canada... AGAIN!

The next-gen Micra has been for sale for a couple of years on the other side of the pond.

In SUV/Crossover-crazy North America, we've now got the Kicks, which is a much more profitable car than the Micra.

And the Kicks is selling much better too: year-to-date, ~5000 Micras vs. ~12,000 Kicks.

In a recent review of the 2019 base S Micra, a journalist says:

The Nissan Micra is a rare member of a shrinking segment. When it goes away, soon enough, it won’t be because this was not a good car.

    [...]

    One more year?

From what I can tell, the 4th generation Nissan Micra has another year left in its lifecycle in Canada. The 5th generation Micra launched more than three years ago in most world markets. As the subcompact car segment continues to struggle, odds that the current Micra will come are zip-to-nil especially given its substantial price increase. Nissan will concentrate on the more profitable Kicks.

I think that's his argument: the next gen K14 Micra will be too expensive to compete in the $10k segment.

Yes, I agree with you MetroMPG.
Nissan is better leaving the current Micra for Mexico and Canada. Great little car. No CVT is the dope.

That said, the Mirage is also due to be replaced, and its replacement may also be too expensive to compete in the $10k segment.

The most credible news I've read says the next gen Mirage will in fact be a badge-engineered version of the new K14 Micra. (Nissan bought a controlling stake in Mitsubishi a couple of years ago.)

It would be extremely weird if you wanted a "new" Micra and you had to go to a Mitsubishi dealership to get one.
