Does my nearly new car really need a new clutch?

    Hi,

Looking for a bit of advice. Took my daughter's nissan Micra that has 4500 miles on the clock for its first service. Asked them to check the clutch as the bite has always felt a little high. Said it needed a new clutch and quoted 870.

There are no symptoms of slipping or anything else and it's been like this from new. I thought that it maybe just needed adjusting.

Long story short, my late mother bought the car and my daughter inherited It, so she is not the original owner. The service was carried out at a different main dealer from where it was bought.

looking for suggestions on what to do

    Thanks.

    Where was the car bought?

Why wouldn't it be under warranty with so few miles on it?

I was always under the impression that clutches were considered "wear" items and excluded from the warranty . A person who constantly rode the clutch or engaged in smoke shows could easily burn through a clutch in a very short time.

Short, as in 4500 miles, with no symptoms of slipping?

Quite right MetroMPG . There should be some symptoms. I would think the warranty should cover manufacturing defect.

if it doesnt slip up a steep hill...ie doesnt slip...it doesnt need replacing....got 200kms out of one original clutch on the civic from brand new and it didnt slip then.......i dont believe in high or low bite there can be other adjustments that affect that ...that said...granny could have slipped the clutch....alot
    2015 Micra S (manual)
    no A/C /no power options/ block heater/4x 2 Ohm speakers...all factory stock in 2015

    What year?

My 2018 has no play. Very sharp bite, impossible to get rolling from a stop. It either revs to 2500rpm or nearly stalls, the grab point is microscopic.

    Curious what year yours is.

weird...my 2015 feels like everything is quite rubbery, i wouldnt say it was a sharp engament point at all...maybe its just the differences between people?..i doubt there is any difference mechanically between 2015 and 2018

The only car I ever drove that has a clutch like Nickels describes had broken damper springs on the clutch disk!

The 4 different manual Micras I've driven have had soft/forgiving friction points.
