2015 Nissan Micra curb weight vs. competitors

Well, the K13 Micra is a pretty light car compared to most. But, let's see how it really stacks up against the other cars it is competing against.

Weights are in kilograms (pounds). The lightest cars are at the top and weight increases as you go down the list.

    Car Manual Weight
    kgs (lbs)
    Automatic Weight
    kgs (lbs)
    1. Smart ForTwo n/a 820 (1808)
    2. Mitsubishi Mirage 895 (1973) 920 (2029)
    3. Scion iQ n/a 965 (2127)
    4. Toyota Yaris 1020 (2249) 1040 (2293)
    5. Chevrolet Spark 1029 (2269) 1074 (2368)
    6. Mazda 2 1043 (2299) 1067 (2352)
    7. Nissan Micra 1044 (2302) 1072 (2363)
    8. Nissan Versa (sedan) 1072 (2364) 1129 (2488)
    9. Fiat 500 1074 (2367) 1106 (2438)
    10. Hyundai Accent 1087 (2396) 1117 (2463)
    11. Kia Rio 1093 (2410) 1125 (2480)
    12. Honda Fit 1132 (2496) 1169 (2577)
    13. Mini Cooper 1150 (2535) 1185 (2612)
    14. Ford Fiesta 1151 (2537) 1168 (2575)

So, the Micra really is a feather compared to most.

But what about power to weight ratios? Isn't that really the most important stat?

So the Micra is about 60 lbs less than the Versa sedan that shares the same drivetrain. That's a bit less than I was expecting. Is that Canadian spec, or??

What also surprises me is how much heavier the little Chevy Spark is than several bigger cars.

2014 Spark automatic weight is 2368 lbs from Chevy's site, so depending on which weight you're sorting by, the Yaris, Mazda 2, and Spark need rearranged.

Its interesting to look at what you get for the weight. Most of these cars will seat 4 or 5 people, but there's a 550 lbs difference between the lightest, Mirage, and the heaviest, Fiesta. It would be interesting to add passenger and cargo volumes to see which is more weight efficient.

it amazes me that my 2000 honda Insight insights weighs in at 1850lbs (+-) and the Micra comes in at 2153, only 300lb or so more. and seats 5 people not 2, and is not mades out of pratically all aluminum. pretty impressive too me.

Agreed! I wonder about the total dimensions. Although, I have heard the entire IMA system is about 400 pounds in total, which would put those added extras verse a petrol only Insight at closer to 700 pounds.

In my best Clarksonian voice, "It's a hot Hatch!" I'm so used to driving lightweight cars now, that i'll never go back. Driving my moms civic, which lands amongst the four heavier cars on that list, feels like driving a schoolbus. I consider nimbleness to be a luxury which the general population hasn't seemed to catch on to yet.

It looks like it has a great power to weight ratio? Probably a great car to autocross and drive for the fun factor?

Reminds me of when the VW GTI came out in the early 80's. Cost effective and good fuel mileage plus major fun factor to drive!!!

It'll remain to be seen how the handling is. They're adding sway bars to the Canadian Micra. If that isn't enough, a few easily installed aftermarket parts can drastically change handling and make a car super fun. The lightness should only aid in that, and the 1.6L will be sufficient for a bit of fun. A few NA mods can probably pep it up a bit too, as shown by the Injen intake providing a 4 hp boost.
