    Gear change RPM

Hi All..I just purchased a micra "S" 5 speed manual..I have had many 5 speed cars in the past and never go above 3000 rpm..I was told by a friend I'm driving wrong and should be going to 5000 rpm while going through the gears..Is he correct.???..Thanks

Going up to 3k is a normal driving. I get mine up to 6500 when i am on a ramp to get on the highway. I kind of like that since i put a short ram intake and can hear this little engine scream.
One thing to know is if you get up to 5000 + it will get your oil darker sooner and need to change your oil before the 10000km like they say

Is your friend Italian by any chance?

If you're accelerating hard (very short on-ramp), or climbing a steep hill, or have a fully loaded car, more RPM between shifts is better.

But in normal driving I rarely go over 3k.

Bonus: the lower your RPM, the better your fuel economy.

Same here, in most case theres no need to rev the engine any higher.
My only wish was for a taller 5th gear or even a 6th gear for highway driving.

I've been shifting around 3,500 rpm, but only because I'm still breaking the car in. If I read correctly, we're supposed to keep shifts under 4k until the odo hits 2,000 kilometres. As soon as it does I'll be winding that baby up!

3000 RPM in 5th gear isn't near fast enough for the highways in Ontario...
