Edmonton to Halifax in a Micra

    Hi everybody!

Just finished a trip from Edmonton to Halifax in my Micra. Along for the ride were an overbearing wife (I pray she never sees this) and two neurotic cats.

It was quite an experience. We averaged 6.24L/100 km with the a/c running almost the whole way.

You can read more about the trip here: http://www.graeme-hughes.com/travel/...on-to-halifax/

Good read, sorry about the lanes up north we keep all our good highways near the US border. Like to put on a big show an all.

It's funny, when you are from the West you don't really appreciate how big Ontario is.....feels like it takes forever to get across.

Especially when you're used to scooting across the bottom of Manitoba in 4 or 5 hours!

Nice write-up. I particularly liked "Casualties of the Day". Nice touch!

Any revalations about the Micra after such a long journey?

Mostly touched on in the write-up, but in short:

    1) a sixth gear would be sweet - 3700 RPM at 120 KM/H (mine's a 5-speed) is a bit high

    2) despite the RPM, fuel economy is good, if not great

    3) the quick-ratio steering, while awesome in town, is tiring on the freeway as small corrections tend to be a bit darty-feeling. Probably not helped by the alloys and 55-series tires.

    4) more comfortable and quieter than I would have guessed

    5) holds more stuff than you think

    6) I never really wanted for more power, even on uphill passes

    7) the Micra didn't feel especially prone to wind buffeting - which really surprised me given that it is both light and tall. My 4500 lb. Dodge Nitro gets blown around more.

    8) The seats are surprisingly comfortable. Now mine is an SR, so I don't know if the seat is different, but I usually get a lot of pain in my shoulders and neck after a few hours. This trip I didn't experience that problem at all which surprised the heck out of me.

In short, I wouldn't hesitate to use the car again for any long road trip.

i guess the Micra's 'speed variable steering' function is not what it's marketed to be!

At 120 in my auto SR I do about 3500Rpm, and that's with a big roof basket giving me extra resistance. And that's actual 120km/h while my speedo is reading about 125.

I have the 'S" model and mine was quite nice and reasonable over 15 hours straight.. Id imagine the SR seats would be even nicer.

I also have a secret weapon. MetroMpg's patented airconditioned seat system (ASS) to keep my rear and back cooler. XD

HAHA - thank you for the genuine LOL at the new acronym! I will be using that.

As for the seats, I realize seat comfort is highly personal/subjective. But the SV/SR seat has an adjustable seat cushion angle that the S doesn't have. I found the difference between them was like night and day in terms of thigh support and overall comfort. I wouldn't hesitate to take the SV/SR on a long journey, but the S would need some tweaking before I'd consider it.
