    Black Plastidiped stockers (SR rims)

Tried a little experiment this weekend with the stock SR rims. Black plastidip on the silver areas of rim. Didn't really turn out very well as the black areas were masked off and when removed didn't cleanly peel off.

Wanted to preserve the metallic black inside area but might just try painting the whole thing instead to minimize the amount masking that needs to be removed, reducing the chance of ruining the finish.

Yeah. I've seen the videos where the masking comes off oh so perfectly. I kinda figured it wouldn't be that easy. Nice of you to share your experiment with us. This could be a good way to fix up older, slightly beat up rims and make them look new and more presentable. Also a good way to change the color that isn't permanent. It will protect the finish. Plastidip seems to be pretty tough. Some people have done whole cars with it.

The OEM SR Trim looks pretty nice to me. i loved it.

BTW, a small suggestion, never go to corner street garage to do tire change, I went to this garage a few years ago to change tires for my old Yaris.. and they scratched the rims, and put them in a plastic bag, i only find out when i need to put on summer tires the next year.. , never never i will use cheap corner-street garage anymore..

Ever since that incident, I have started using chalk to put a small mark on my tires, and always always look for the marks when the garage give them back to me in a plastic bag.. Also check if there are any scratches on the rims...

Did you peel when dry or peel when wet?
with plasti dip you have to peel when wet to get the clean lines.
otherwise it bridges onto the tape and will start to peel the rest with it.

I let it dry for a couple hours so that could be the case. How do you peel it off wet if you have to let it dry in between coats and are doing 3-4 coats though?

When I plasti dip i always have 6 to 8 coats for durability and peelability.
and you would do your first 5 coats, then on the last coat peel the tape off right after you stop spraying.
this is called peel when wet, at this stage it is not bridged to the tape

Here is mine, i did 6 coats of blaze purple, changed my mind the put 6 coats of black followed by 3 coats of gold metalizer and peeled off the tape around the tire on my last coat and it came out smooth.

Ah I see thanks for the tip! Ugh if only masking off the internal areas wasn't such a pain.

Nice job on your rims. How has the durability been so far?

Ya doing two tones takes alot of patience, something i do not have haha.
durability wise, i pressure wash my car and i've had the sprayer right up to the wheels and they have held.
also held all winter. i'm peeling them off currently to re do all black as i am plasti dipping my whole car in the next couple months.
as long as you put the recommended 6-8 coats its not coming off unless you want it to.

Just did the whole wheel without any masking. Excuse the dirty car.
