Design flaw on manual transmission shift cable?

Drove to a friends place last night and couldn't put my car in reverse anymore.
Shifter felt completely loose sideways. Popped the middle console up and found that the right hand shift cable came off the attachment.
Seems to hold good in place after I attached it again.
Can't really explain why it came off in the first place.

Going to tell the dealer next week.
Thought I would share in case somebody is having the same issue in the future.
