"A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is the string of 17 numbers and letters that an automobile manufacturer assigns to an individual vehicle. The VIN can reveal a number of things about a car, including its airbag type, country of origin, engine size, model year and trim level."

Here is a generic Micra VIN as an example:
3N1CK3CP1FL123456
(...is Nick a good name for a car?)
The first number is 3. This means the car was built in Mexico.
Canada is 2 and J is for Japan.
Less intuitively: L is China and TW is Portugal
The N means, Nissan. Yup.
VW is; guess who.
ZHW is Lamborghini.
See the total list here
The 1 after the 3N probably indicates the first Nissan Division in Mexico.
The C seems to denote the Engine Line.
The K means Model Line? Not sure here. K as in K13?
3 is the Model Change, whatever that means. Maybe the 3 in the 13.
...and the 2nd C means, oh heck. No idea. P1 as well. Internal codes... Safety things.
The F does make sense.
It means the car was made in 2015.
E is 2014 and G is 2016.
Easy.
The L is the plant code, in this case Aguascalientes Mexico where they also produce the Versa and Sentra.
Agua Calientes means Hot Water or Hot Springs.
As in the ones you find in Iceland, British Columbia or in Japan. (They call them Onsen)
The Micra was born in a spa! Steamy!
Here is a great article about the Micra factory.
The last six numbers indicate the serial number of the car as it rolled off the line.
Mine is a 2015 year, 203246
