Writer Justin Pritchard gets his hands on a bare bones Micra.

    Likes

    - the price, duh!
    - even nicely loaded (SV), around $16k the price is reasonable
    - tiny turning radius
    - robust suspension better than he expected
    - engine: pleasing, happy, eager
    - "pleasant and comfortable machine to drive, overall"

    Dislikes

    - "uneasy" on the highway, especially in wind or near trucks; direct competitor Mirage is more confident
    - manual rear door locks nearly impossible to reach from the driver's seat

    Overall

Whether you’re after a thrifty and affordable first car, a spritely second car or something to take to work when you don’t need the size and fuel bill of the family SUV, the Nissan Micra should fit the bill as an attainable, affordable, and basic transportation product.
A small mistake in this review, and an oversight. The oversight: I find it surprising that he fails to mention that the base car does not have air conditioning. This will be a deal-killer for the vast majority of new car buyers.

Mistake: he calls the car a "lightweight". OK, relative to an SUV, sure it is. But the Micra falls square in the middle of the spectrum for weight for small cars, neither light nor heavy.

Funny, I thought the Mirage was more shaky on the highways... that and the high whine of the 3cyl at 120 kph

For me the mirage could have a twenty year, five hundred thousand k bumper to bumper and I would not buy one. The last time I bought a Mitsubishi I bought two.....the first one and the last one.

I've driven both too, and I didn't notice any crosswind stability issues with either. The Micra's steering at speed, on the other hand, beats the Mirage's hands down for feel & confidence.

I started a thread about the stability criticism -- it's come up in multiple reviews:
How's your Micra's stability on the highway?
