Sorry to hear you're going for a Golf. I rode in one of those and felt claustrophobic; my head kept rubbing on the headliner. Okay for the shorter man, I suppose; you'll probably be okay if you're shorter than me.

In our culture obsessed with absurd excess, the Nissan Micra is my counterculture car of choice.

So I guess we can definitively count this as another blown micra engine. Or dead anyway...

well, another engine with the rod bearing knock, plus the head gasket problem, these are 2 different problems.
i was informed about a blown engine here with 30k km (throw a rod out the block, total engine destruction)
also i was told that some 2012 or 2013 models have problems on the cylinder head, so they need the head to be replaced, all around 10k km
i am also planing to sell the car and get a golf 1.4 tsi, i was also interested in mt new honda fit, but they are having a lot of problems with clutch and transmision, so the golf is a better choise (and more expensive )
audi-driver, is your engine replacement already done?? how is the car running now??

Hey there everyone, sorry for the delay in response. Ive been very busy. I have gotten the Micra back from the shop. Ive had it for a few days now. It seems to be functioning well. After the dealership got the new long block assembly installed they drove the car for a short amount of time before they began noticing some very bad running issues, stuttering and poor idle. They took it back into the shop and began troubleshooting. Apparently they had the engine apart several times to see where they went wrong. After several back and fourth conversations with Nissan technicians they decided to flush my Fuel tank and put new fuel in which solved the problem. Its been running well since. However i have been noticing poor fuel economy compared to before the engine replacement. 5.6L /100km vs 5.9L / 100km. Cant figure out why exactly.

I am still hoping to trade the Micra in though. Ive heard too much about engine failures to want to chance keeping it, especially if im financing it! With the new motor i am still hearing some of that very quiet intermittent rattling or (rod knock) or whatever everyone has diagnosed it to be.

Plus it's an ugly car. I wonder why they did not update the design of their cars, especially the small ones. I guess it's a matter of personal taste but I would not drive one if they would give it to me.

extra fuel consumption is normal because new engine need to acumulate some mileage to improve performance.
idle problem is a common fault on this engines, in mexico a guy crash when his versa shut down when driving so he loose braking power, you can read his story on opinautos.
in some cases the problem is fuel related, in others is throtle body dirty, but in worst cases the throttle body needs to be replaced and in worst cases the ecu, some 350z had a similar problem.
another guy from mexico had his versa engine replaced because of the knock only 3 days after of buying the card, brand new lol.
i agree with you people, golf design is not very good, but the car is good quality, hope i can afford it by end of year.
if not, plan B is ford fiesta 1.6 16v, or honda fit 1.5 if they solve the MT problems.
is suzuki swift sport 1.6 136bhp sold in canada?? i also like that car, but i think is a bit expensive (At least here, 30.000 dollars, 34.000 the golf, 26.000 the fit, 25.000 the ford).

and you call that common? I don't even think it's normal. I would not consider this normal if my car was doing anything like that. I would bring back at the dealer any car that has such problem.

Suzuki is not a good buy any longer because the company is leaving Canada and the USA. No more new Suzuki will be sold here.

yes, i call that common because there are a lot of owners with those problems.
of course is not normal, but sadly are common problems.
what is not common (at least not yet, and obviously not normal) is to have the engine replaced, and get another faulty one.
Hope audi-driver and i can trade the car soon, is the best fix i think.

suzuki still makes cars? color me surprised

btw, the new golf deserved the car of the year award it got. it truly is a class above cars like the micra.

unfortunatly, so is the price. oh and vw is not known for great reliability, which is of #1 importance to me.

Hey everyone. I see this thread of mine is sparking up alot of debate! Debate is good if its kept friendly so lets keep it friendly. We do not need a war between the Micra and Golf!

My opinion here goes like so: The Nissan Micra K13 is a fantastic little car and a great buy. Its an attractive little car that drives well and gets good fuel economy. It does everything that a car of this class should do. And thats why i walked into a Nissan dealership. I have my nit-picks with this car, but i also love it half to death. Alot of us here feel the same way. Unfortunately some of us are experiencing some concerning engine issues. There is no doubt that we have discovered a common widespread issue effecting some cars, not all! And for that reason i wish to part ways with the car. I am not here to tell everyone to stay away from the Micra, I am only sharing my unfortunate story. So thumbs up to everyone else who believes their money is well spent.

Now the Golf. Ill share my opinion in an unbiased way.

Price: 15' Nissan Micra SR $15,748 - 15' VW Golf Highline TSI $28,496

Exterior Design: 15' Nissan Micra SR: 7/10 - 15' VW Golf Highline TSI 5/10

Interior Design: 15 Nissan Micra SR 5/10 - 15 VW Golf Highline TSI 9/10

Driving feel: 15 Nissan Micra SR 6/10 - 15' VW Golf highline TSI 8/10

Quality: 15 Nissan Micra SR 6.5/10 - 15 VW Golf Highline TSI 8/10
