Large is better than small if you focus primarily on the impact between two vehicles. What people often miss is what comes before a collision, which is accident avoidance. In my opinion, a smaller, lighter, nimble car like the Micra is better able to avoid the accident in the first place. A minivan would be placed at a disadvantage in a frontal offset collision simply because its size and mass would make it more difficult to avoid such an accident in a minivan. Of course, accident avoidance requires driver skill and training, and many people would rather buy a bigger, heavier car than invest in professional driver's training. A shame, really; they could have more fun and save more money in the long run with the training and a small car.

In our culture obsessed with absurd excess, the Nissan Micra is my counterculture car of choice.

Can't remember where but I read that Nissan had to improve the Micra in order to satisfy the safety standards here in Canada and the March would not have passed our tests. So what exactly did they do to the European March to make it fit for the Canadian market?

I thought that was for making the car smoother in our horrible roads with lots of pits? Does it help to give strength to the frame?

It does drive pretty smooth for a car that size. I prefer it to the Honda Civic which is a pain in the butt...literally speaking.

The roll bars (stabilizer bars) help to reduce body roll in corners without stiffening the springs. They don't contribute to frame/body strength.

I think the thing you might have read about was that the K13 was designed from the beginning to meet U.S./Canada motor vehicle regulations:

2015 Nissan Micra: $10K Minicar For Canada--Paid For By Smart?

We suspect that Nissan was able to offer the Micra in Canada only because another company had already largely paid for the engineering work to "Federalize" the car for North America

No no. I mean the roll bars, wider tires would make for better handling (possibly safer)

What would it means "Federalize" in that context? I can't get it...

    Cheers!

Martin, in that context it just means that the car was designed from the beginning to have (or easily add on) all the safety features required by U.S. regulations so that it could be sold there:

    http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/FMVSS/

Canada's vehicle safety regulations are almost identical to the U.S. ones, which is why it was relatively easy for the car to be brought here. Normally, car companies don't spend the money to design their cars so they can be sold in Canada if they're not also planning to sell them in the U.S.

    Aha, gotcha.

I have a feeling they don't give points for "possibly" improved safety. Otherwise, we'd all be driving around with wide open exhausts, because "loud pipes save lives"! Right!? Right!
