    Another Autos.ca Review: Road Trip: $9,998 2015 Nissan Micra S 5-speed

Autos.ca has posted another review of the Micra
, this time with a bit more humourous bent.

One mistake in the article was a reference to alloy wheels on the base model the reviewer was driving. The author said in the article comments that he's going to update the review, but he hasn't yet.

    Road Trip: $9,998* 2015 Nissan Micra S 5-speed Review (Autos.ca)

Unless my memory is failing me, this is the first review I've seen of the base Micra S. Base as in 5-speed transmission. Base as in "A/C Tax: Nope". The only option on this one is $135 for the eye-catching metallic blue paint job.

And guess what? The reviewer still likes it:

    Likes:

    - styling "looks pretty great"
    - good ergonomics/controls
    - usable cargo area
    - manual is OK: "clutch engagement is fine and the throws are short enough"
    - decent power to weight: "this is first-generation Miata levels of performance – slow, but kinda feels fast."

    Dislikes:

    - fuel economy isn't great (bigger Corolla is more efficient)
    - 3k highway RPM: top gear is too revvy
    - the price of adding an automatic is too much: "the kind of money that would have me looking hard at the used market."

    My favourite line:

Somewhere along the factory line at Nissan’s Aguascalientes plant, someone upended a jar of Mexican jumping beans into the Micra’s intake. It’s excellent fun, a snorty, huck-it-into-a-corner, trail-braking, electric-blue pinball.
    Overall:

Cheap and cheerful? ... Oh yes, indeed. It’s inexpensive but doesn’t feel like a penalty box, fun to drive but cheap to operate, somewhat practical but right-sized for urban driving. It’s the Timbit of modern motoring

Which is an odd mistake because the pics clearly show the plastic wheelcovers... and he took his own pics.

They're on to the 2nd page of comments about this review in the Autos.ca forum. I particularly like this one:

It is so refreshing to see a cheap car evaluated in its proper economic context and not implicitly compared to a Cayman or 3 Series.
I heartily agree. ^ THAT is a chronic problem in reviews of entry level cars.

agreed. hence why economic cars never make the 'car of the year' awards, unless subdivided into the 'small cars under 30k' category

A problem well illustrated with the show Top Gear. No wonder they hate the Micra.

In our culture obsessed with absurd excess, the Nissan Micra is my counterculture car of choice.
