Nissan dual fuel injection on 1.6L Micra engine HR16DE

Above: Dual fuel injection system configuration.
    Information source: http://www.nissan-global.com/EN/TECH..._injector.html

To improve combustion stability and efficiency, one well known approach is reducing fuel droplet diameter.

The Dual Injector system uses 2 narrower injectors per cylinder mounted closer to each intake valve, so the injectors can have smaller nozzle holes, wider spray cone angles, and shorter spray cone lengths.

With this approach the dual injector system realizes smaller fuel droplet size and results in smoother, more stable combustion.

Shown above, a conventional single injector must be placed further from the intake valves, and its narrower and longer spray cone has a larger average fuel droplet size.

    Benefits:

With dual injection in combination with Continuously Variable valve Timing Control (CVTC), fuel efficiency is increased by up to 4% compared with Nissan gasoline-powered engines in the same class.

This combined approach also results in less unburnt fuel in the exhaust, so half the amount of rare metal is required in the catalytic converter.

Good info Darin. I bet this allows them to run in closed loop mode over a broader area of the fuel and ignition map. I would also imagine it allows them to run more advanced timing for increased power and fuel economy. Its an interesting setup without going to direct injection.

Is anyone other than Nissan doing this?

Yes Suzuki is doing the dual injector setup as well. It will be in the new Suzuki Celerio for the European markets and is already in the JDM Swift.
The JDM version of the Swift, which features a 1.2 liter K-series petrol engine with Dualjet injector technology, start-stop and brake energy regeneration is touted to deliver a mileage of 26.4 Kmpl. Well, that’s nearly 8 Kmpl more than the ARAI certified fuel efficiency figure of 18.6 Kmpl for the Indian Swift.

That 1.6L is a gem of a motor. No wonder it's so quiet and smooth, given this level of attention to detail. Amazing that Nissan can deliver this level of quality in this price range.

    Thanks for that info, jamie.

Alpha: I did detect a light "ticking" when standing in front of one of the idling Micras. I wondered if it might have been from the injectors. It wasn't a severe noise by any stretch of the imagination, but it caught my attention. I forgot to check the second Micra to see if it had the same sound.

Couldn't hear it inside the car, though. And I agree the engines were surprisingly quiet & smooth the way I drove them (under ~3k RPM).

Darin, it wouldn't surprise me that you could hear the clicking of the injectors over the engine; it really is that quiet.

Did you also notice that each of the direct ignition coils are emblazoned with a letter "M"? I wonder if that stands for "Micra."

Clicking injectors aren't anything real new. A friend at work let me listen to his GTI's (2.0L direct injection) engine and wow you can really hear them.

DI injectors are SO LOUD. Listen to a modern BMW. Sounds like a super loose valve-train. To a lesser extent, a north american Juke just ticks away. Takes some getting used to.

Wondering if each of the injectors can be actuated independently, or do they always fire in tandem?
