Muffler heat shield - torn off

Well Im down in NS and the micra made it through that tropical storm, but I hit a real deep surprise puddle at 100kph. It mangled the rear heat shield that separates the fuel tank from the exhaust.

Now there is a few inches clearance between the fuel tank and the exhaust. I've gone on a few highway runs with it, idled her for 30 mins in the parking lot with a/c, the fuel tank doesn't seem to get hot at all. Seems like that thin piece of tin isn't doing much.

There isn't any nissan dealers here. Think its safe to drive home?

    -Thx

Highway driving would have the most air flow (and so heat dissipation) under the car. If it were mine, I wouldn't give it a second thought for the return trip.

Seems like half those tin heat shields have rusted and fallen off within 10 years anyway, and we don't have an epidemic of old cars going boom.

Glad you got through the deluge!

The autoignition point for gasoline is 246 - 280 C (475 - 536 F). I doubt your exhaust pipe by the gas tank would get that hot, and even if it did, the plastic gas tank would act as an insulator, as does would air between the exhaust system and the gas tank.

I suspect the heat shield is more to keep heat from radiating into the inside of the car.

In our culture obsessed with absurd excess, the Nissan Micra is my counterculture car of choice.

    Yup!!

I didn't see any exploding Micra news reports yesterday, so I assume you had a good trip home. Back to sunshine.
