The potential downside of electric steering for some early adopters was steering feel (if you believe reviewers).

But I think the Micra's steering is nicely weighted and has decent feel.

My car before my current one was a 1993 Lincoln Town Car, steering feel wasnt on the list when engineer designed it

Ha! Lack of steering feel on a Lincoln Town Car was a "feature". One finger parking!

That's true. Clearly, the hydraulic pumps were poorly designed, incapable of going into a truly free spinning mode during non-load conditions.

For the record, I preferred the variable speed hydraulic pump feel on my old Grand Am GT to the electronic steering of my '09 Torrent, but I have to admit Nissan did an excellent job on the Micra, which has a much nicer feel than the Torrent and comes close enough to my old Grand Am GT for my daily driving steering satisfaction.

In our culture obsessed with absurd excess, the Nissan Micra is my counterculture car of choice.

Agreed. If I didn't know, I don't think I could have told you that the Micra had electric assist.

Compared to the malibu, the micra is spot-on. The malibu's electric power steering was.. Well.. Numb. Felt a lot like those driving simulators where you screwed the steering wheel controller to the desk and plugged it into the pc.

I am curious what maintenance it needs... So far as I can see.. I dont see anywhere to put lubricant into it.. Or anything really.

If you don't like the feel of the EPS, there are some tutorials online on how to make circuits to tweak them.
