From an article in the Globe and Mail....

  • compact & subcompact car/CUV sales: 61% in Quebec vs. 45.8% Canada-wide.

  • import brand compacts (Corolla, Mazda3, Accent, Jetta) in Quebec account for between 47-71% of Canadian sales

  • Quebecois "historically buy the least amount of vehicle they can afford", unlike Albertans for example, who buy the most.

  • Fiat 500: 43% of its first year sales (5700) were in Quebec

  • Hyundai and Nissan top the Quebec market (Hyundai has 29% of its dealers in Quebec)

  • The Big 3 domestic brands sell relatively poorly: 50% nationally, but 30% in Quebec (partly because large SUV and pickup truck sales are lower)

  • Quebec has the lowest rate of car ownership rate: 1.35 cars/household vs. 1.47 nationally (2009)

Why?

  • "less disposable income, higher fuel prices and an urbanized population"

  • Quebec City and Montreal have the 2nd and 3rd highest gas prices after Vancouver

  • Environmental sustainability is a bigger concern
