What's the longest you've owned a car? How long do you plan to keep your Micra?

The black car in my avatar is my 1998 Pontiac Firefly. 1.0L, 3-cyl, 5-speed. (The Micra is a 2015 SR automatic that Nissan loaned me to test drive.)

I've had the Firefly since 2005, so that's coming up on 13 years.

I don't drive a lot, and it's rarely seen winter, so there's a LOT of life left in it -- it's only got ~42k kms on it now (at that rate, it's good for another 80-100 years at least). Prior to the Firefly, the longest I'd kept a car was 4 or 5 years.

I also typically have a "winter beater" (arguably a nicer car than the Firefly, ironically). But the winter beaters only stick around for a year or 2. The most recent beaters: 2000 Metro; 2004 Echo; 2004 Prius; 2007 Civic). Used Micras have not yet entered my budgetary range for either summer or winter status.

What about you? How long do you keep your cars?

4.5 Years for me. It was a 2005 Hyundai Accent Gsi and I had it until 2009. Bought it 20k and sold it at 85k. Sold for peanuts just after I paid the payments off, so mad!

9.5 years for me and also a 2005 Accent GSI. Bought it at two years old and 12, 000 km on the clock and traded it in on the Micra in 2016. I had a 1981 Toyota Celica that I bought new and traded in on a 1990 Plymouth Sundance. Big mistake . The Plymouth was a POS car with more problems than all the other cars I have owned over 50 years put together. I exclude my Dad's 1960 Renault Dauphine ( about 28 horsepower and with a real crank to turn the engine over when the starter motor failed) I learned to drive on that POS when it was working. Mostly it was broken down. Otherwise I usually get the itch for a new car about every 6 years but sometimes I can't find anything that interests me and that is why I had the Accent for 9.5 years. The Micra was interesting and still is.

I don't know how long I will keep it. If something different comes along and says "Buy me!" I will.

Had to sell my 1995 Honda CX in 2016, since Mexico changed the laws and wouldn't let me keep the car in Mexico. One of the BEST cars I ever owned and miss it still...

What was the purpose for the law that prevented you from keeping your Civic??

Immigration changed their laws. Initially you could maintain your foreign vehicle as long as your immigration status was up to date. They later changed the law and stated you would have to "nationalize" the vehicle, which in most cases costs more than the vehicle is worth. Some expats simply refused and went back to their respective counties. The laws and requirements change here as often as a Canadian summer's day!

So, probably just a scheme to get people to buy a car produced in MX.

My 2015 Micra is the longest I’ve owned a car. I usually buy old used cars or get short term car leases then dump the car after two or three years. The Micra is on a five year term. I have 16 months left but no plan on my next car. Essentially, just need another sub compact with more legroom.
