Fan hitting something, no heat or Defrost. *Video* Solved: ICE hitting fan.

Tonight leaving work. I started my car. It started and all that I could hear is the fan hitting something(like putting a playing card in the fan) from the vents above the CD Player. As I turned up the speed the noise got louder. I had no heat or defrost for 20 minutes. Once that car warmed up it was fine. But I shouldn't have to drive to warm the car up so I can use heat or defrost. It's going into the dealership on Monday. Has anyone else had this problem?

Sounds like something caught in the squirrel cage, and / or your blower motor is toast.

    Similar issue here:

I think that it's the blower motor and dealership can deal with it under warranty.

Sounds like a plan. Please let us know how it turns out... NilotheFilipino didn't update his fan thread with the final outcome.

And it's too bad he removed his fan noise video - would have been good to compare to yours.

I had wished that there was a video of his as well. I looked around and wasn't able to find anyone else that had the same issue. I will post as soon as I get the car back. They said "might not be today, maybe tomorrow?" I am going to be getting a loaner so I won't be left without a vehicle.

    I'll keep this thread posted.

These holes bring in air from the outside. They on the passenger side just below the wiper. There's some ice on them and the ice hit the fan causing the noise. Once the car heated up, the ice melted and the horrid noise went away.

So make sure they're clear and you won't have any issues.

    That was an easy fix.

    Thanks for the update!

(PS: I updated the thread title to reflect that it was solved.)

I don't yet own a MICRA, but I read in another thread that some MICRAs come with an in-cabin air filter. We own a CUBE that does have a filter as do VERSAs sold in the USA. I change it yearly and there is always a lot if debris in it. I think that the filter would stop any pieces of ice from reaching the squirrel cage. The filter is accessed by removing a narrow oval plastic plate behind, and to the side of the glovebox. There are plenty of videos online showing how to change them. (removing the glovebox is a PITA; I think the filter can be changed without removing the box.
When I buy a MICRA next spring I will put a filter in it in hope that it will prolong the life if the fan

I just went through the this last month. My problem ended up being leafs rattling around in side the fan box. The filter is after the fan.
