Thread: My second engine replacement : this time by me

    Engine number is HR16*800078J
    Oil is clean not milky or anything
    Coolant was good
    Trans fluid clear.

    Heater cord is severed at the plug with no plug.
    Small crack in the rad fan so there was some front impact.
    Axels end look better then mine did lol.
    Cv joints seem good no notable noises or visuals
    On of the sensors was damaged I think I did that but no worries
    And the oil pan cuz it was sitting on it. Meh.

    Day 1 progress :
    Intake manifold off ( plan custom metal intake plenum , no more over the top manifold )
    Injectors and fuel rail off ( send for test flow clean if needed )
    Valve cover off (send for sand blast , hi temp paint and clear coat )

    Review cylinder head removal procedure and videos for tips

    Plan next steps.

    Day2 adgenda remove crankshaft pulley bolt and pulley

    Remove can shafts
    Remove head ( consider decking to raise c/r to 10.7-11.5 static 9.4-10.2 effective vs 9.8:1 static 8.5 effective)


    Inspect exhaust valves ( send for cleaning )
    Polish intake and exhaust ports

    I know I've been going back an forth but this kinda makes sense now.

    I have 2 full blocks.

    I can't raise compression an keep intake temps and pressures stable and linear.
    So I'll keep standard hg and deck height.
    Use the TD04HL-16T ( same as juke ) at 6psi (g)manifold (20.7 psia)
    At 11.5:1 afr .55 bsfc 175hp needs 18.448lbs/min
    With ambient air at 70*f VE .90 rpm 6500 cid 98

    21.82 psia- 14.7 = 7.12psig
    Pressure loss thru water to air intercooler 1.1psi
    Ambient pressure 14.3psi

    = 6psi g manifold 1.6 pressure ratio 18.45lb/min ( 275cfm - 0.14kg/s )

    Using water to air I can maintain Ambient intake temps ( the problem I was having before with making it work )

    Do to the procedure and tools required to remove the spark plugs ( which I have about 16 spark plug sockets and none fit in the tiny opening and engage the hex ) crank pulley and such I'm tepmorarily delayed.

    So I started a parts/nods list for the turbo / w2a inter cooler. Here it is, enjoy

    ITG foam filter

    Induction pipe 275cfm;
    with maf
    - coupler turbo inlet
    - catch can vacuum

    Td04hl-16t
    - hoses oil
    - oil source
    - coolant hoses
    - coolant source
    - vacuum source for IWG
    - CBV vacuum from turbo

    Turbo to t/b pipe
    * Turbo outlet welded
    * t/b to head welded closed
    - Turbo to tb coupler

    W2A inter cooler ;
    - inline barrel type
    - -10AN
    - Bosch pump 3/4" barbed ;
    - 17.2mm ID 19mm OD -10?
    - Heat exchanger or res

    180* pipe ( w2a>plenum)
    - closed system welded
    - temp probe
    - bung for aux injector ( water / methanol )

    Custom front facing plenum
    - using smic piece
    - pcv to plenum nipple
    - Evap plenum nipple
    - charcoal canister
    - Evap purge solenoid
    - Boost / vac manifold gauge
    - IWG vac source

    Exhaust adapter to turbo flange
    - EGT probe
    - exWG
    - down pipe

    Battery relocation
    - wire and connecter
    - battery tray or strap

    T/b relocation
    - coolant loop

    Oil filter relocation
    - coolant loop
    - aux oil supply ( increase available oil to bottom end and make sure it doesn't run dry )

    Catch can
    Coolant for oil.
    Coolant for t/b
    Coolant for turbo

    Boost gauge
    Afr gauge
    2x temp gauge
    Ecu - uprev

    So I'm in.
    It took a meter long breaker bar and wrapping the belt around the pulley to crack the bolt loose.
    Probably close to 300lbs+ of torque maybe more. The bar was bending almost 20* before the bolt gave.
    Removing the Pulley was easy. Just wiggle it on all sides with a smal crow bar.
    I need to re read the procedure for removing the cams again.
    You need to put a small Allen key in the Intake cam and have it fully advanced then undo the bolt.
    Once the front of the cams are loosened you remove the timing chain.
    Then the cams can be removed and I can access the head bolts and remove the head.
    This will allow me to see the pistons and valves.

    Now if I can use this to compare against my head and can confirm or deny valve damage to my engine.
    I would also have 2 sets of part to pick the best ones and replace.

    Next is the trans.

    I'm going to remove it at the bell housing. Now that the engine will be significantly lighter ( and I have access to the mounting points it can go on my engine stand..

    Then the bottom end comes off. I can inspect the con rods for any play against the crank

    If there is damage to this used engine I'll be talking with the seller again. Good thing I've only paid 1/2 at this point.
    I don't expect any, but then again he said it was rear ended and I can see signs that there was front impact as well.

    Also starting to doubt the kms. My engine looks better externally this has oxidation and topical rust worse then mine.
    Could be a sign that it ran at very high temps. Like the alternator looks twice as old as mine. Looks can be deceiving tho.

    Wow, awesome undertaking!
    Hoping that it all goes smoothly for you and I'm excited to see your process if you do stick with going for Choo Choo power!

    Also thanks for the pictures of the internals. I've been curious since purchase however (knock on wood) nothing needing that level of attention has happened yet.. As far as the oxidation goes maybe it was sitting for a while? my engine bay doesn't look all that great either. and Im around 45000kms

    Also are you using the factory manual for the car tear down? or just googlin away?

    That's a big job that you have set aside for yourself. Way beyond my ability. I like the pictures; interesting to see just how it all looks on the inside.

    I like to the manual for advice and when I look at something scratch my head and think wtf.

    Also for the special procedures and torque readings. But honestly, to me, it's unbolt this unbolt that..
    I've done basic regular maintenance to all my cars since 2004
    And went to Niagara college for motive power tech. I was told to test out. get to work.
    I dropped out mid-term.

    Becoming a mechanic is literally an open book test pass/fail
    And you get a copy of. 1/5 test to practice on with answers. So literally any test you have 20% of test right of the bat and may even get the exact test .. Especially if you re-take.

    To become a master tech you amass quite literally a fortune in debt and tools
    And make enough so you basically even out at around $20/hr for life.
    And have 4 tones of metal you have to move around if you move or change company's.
    And you do move around. Or you open your own shop and basically live there.

    I decided to continue being an enthusiast and have fun with cars instead and roll the dice on a different career path.

    I just finished my last OSAP payment. For 1/4 of a semester in 2010. Nowadays it's free.

    I'm not even salty about it ( super salty ) lol
