    Developing a MAF sensor housing for custom air intakes (Micra / Versa)

    Its been mentioned a few times on the forum, but I've been wanting to develop a part for our Micras. I'm starting this thread to show the development process because I think its fun and interesting. The part I'm developing is a stand alone mass airflow (MAF) sensor housing. It will be used for those of you who would like to make their own custom air intakes.

    Why is this part needed? The OEM MAF sensor housing is molded into the airbox. If you want to make a custom air intake, you would have to cut up the airbox to do so. So, you get a new airbox from Nissan which costs a fair amount, and then you have to hack it up. The much easier solution? A purpose built custom MAF sensor housing that drops right in.

    But, one can not make a custom MAF sensor housing without knowing the dimensions of the original, so I ordered one of the OEM airbox housings. Here are some pics.

    So this slot style maf housing that you are developing will be on the OEM sized tubing?

    The MAF housing has to be OEM sized. If it isn't, it throws off the MAF readings and you'll probably get a CEL. Upstream of the housing you can change to whatever size tubing you would like.

    Yeah i'm in the hospital recovering from major abdominal surgery and am on heavy drugs.
    I asked the question wrong.
    What I was trying to ask I guess is housing simply going to be along a small section of OEM sized tubing?

    Ah, gotcha.

    This piece goes right where the airbox used to go. The MAF sensor stays exactly where it is in the OEM setup. So you would plug the MAF housing into the rubber piece right off the throttle body. Then, you connect whatever piping and pod filter you want to it to create your own intake, and for a ton less than the price of an Injen or other intake.

    Good to see you're following through with this! I hope my setup doesn't throw a CEL. The MAF mount I have en route is 2.48" ID. If it ends up giving me trouble I'd love to modify my intake setup to include one of yours. If you do an initial batch/sale let me know.

    I considered hacking up the stock one but it wasn't very appealing.. lol.

    Thanks spacewolf. I appreciate you willingness to help out.

    I've continued the development. Using a digital caliper for accuracy, I measured up and then modeled the MAF housing. I'm a mechanical designer, this is what I do professionally. It has the same internal and critical dimensions as the OEM airbox has, but its obviously setup to be connected to whatever custom piping you would like to add to it. The arrow indicates the direction of airflow.

    That is a good question. I'm not 100% sure yet. I still have to get parts 3d printed and see how long it takes to do so. That'll help determine cost.
