2017 Micra fuel economy rating is lower than 2015/16.

Just noticed this from the new 2017 Micra brochure vs. 2016:

    Name: micra-fuel-economy-2017-vs-2016.jpg
Views: 3708
Size: 44.8 KB

    2017 fuel economy rating:

    • 8.7 / 6.8 (manual transmission)
    • 8.9 / 6.8 (automatic)

    2015/16 fuel economy rating:
    • 8.6 / 6.6 (manual transmission)
    • 8.8 / 6.6 (auto)

I don't think anything in the car itself has changed to cause this.

In the U.S., the EPA revised testing methods for 2017 to ensure the auto manufacturers were setting up the dynamometer properly for the tests.

Remember how a few automakers got in trouble in the past few years for using "erroneous" (haha) road load values which under-reported aero/mechanical drag and therefore inflated their fuel economy ratings vs. real world results? Hyundai, for example. The same thing has been going on in Japan with both Suzuki and Mitsubishi getting in crap for gaming road load values on their government's tests.

Not surprisingly, the changes affect the highway rating more.

And apparently these changes have been adopted by NRCAN too.

Which means: be careful comparing 2017 ratings against ratings published for earlier years. Because even if the car has not changed at all, the 2017 ratings will be a bit worse.

8.7 is not a great number for a car in this class :/

Maybe not. But the 1.6 in it is one of the most powerful engines in the class.

If Nissan Canada had sourced the Micra with the 1.2L 3-cylinder that they use in Europe and Australasia, it would have been a very different animal. An animal that the press would not have liked very much (see: Mirage). There would be no Micra Cup.

The good news is: with the stick, it's pretty easy to beat the car's official ratings while still having some fun.

There is a balance that exists between fuel economy and fun, and I believe the 5 speed Micra exists in that balance. At least until gas passes past $4 per liter.

In our culture obsessed with absurd excess, the Nissan Micra is my counterculture car of choice.

Do they not have the gas mileages backwards on that chart? My 2015 Micra gives better mileage in the city and a lot less on the highway. I'm still getting 5.2 to 5.5 in the city since buying the car. Can't say what it gets on the highway because I haven't taken it on the highway since first owning it and back then when I did it was getting 8.0.

It's not backward for the majority of people.

I also tend to get better mileage in town than on the freeway with a stickshift, but it's all in how you drive (and what your driving environment is like).

I am on my second tank of gas on my 2017 Micra S and I am averaging 6.4L/100km.
My city driving is fairly economical, never used the 5th gear on a car for city driving until now. But the Micra seems to be happy cruising at 50-60km/h with really low rpm. My highway driving style.... well, lets just say i am not an hypermiler and I could easily improve my fuel millage. Id love to have a 6th gear or a taller 5th gear.

In mostly city driving with some highway, my ScanGauge seems to indicate I'm usually hovering around the low 6 mark.

I have not driven my micra much because of the snow....we just use our jeep patriot or suburban. But when we were using it I was getting between 5.5-6.4 depending on how I drive it. In contrast, the vehicle it replaced my Jeep Wrangler unlimited was getting between 12.5-18 OUCH!

Too funny, kojack. I run a Jeep Cherokee, a Suburban and a Micra, too.

Averaged 5.8 last winter in my 2015 manual S, with studded snow tires.
