thanks for the data, as always

yes, fleets exist, but those are all just rental vehicles, which i think is a poor barometre for measuring consumer demand. not only that, rentals notoriously lower the product's image, esp if its base trim. the cheap plastic interior of a rental Micra would certainly make an impression

anyways, im just happy there are more subcompacts. subcompacts are kewl

I agree! Healthy competition strengthens the breed.

Everything I've read says the new Spark is much better than the last one, and some reviewers are saying it's the best overall pick of the "city cars". (Still haven't driven one, personally.) And Mitsubishi improved the Mirage's braking & handling for 2017, plus a small (4 hp) power increase in its 1.2L triple.

I think this is in part because the Micra put some fire under the butts at GM and Mitsu to try harder, and that's good.

    October

Hmmm. Micra sales took a breather last month: 703 sold, down from 880 last October:

    http://nissannews.com/en-CA/nissan/c...canadian-sales

Only 2 other months have seen lower Micra sales (not counting its first incomplete month).

Still, that's still more Micras sold than Sparks (384 sold, up from 75 last year) and Mirages (237, down from 249).COMBINED.

    November

Car sales overall at Nissan were down 10% last month. Truck/SUV/CUV is where all the action is, up 28%.

    As for the Micra...

662 sold last month. (Compare to 924 in Nov. 2014; 877 in Nov. 2015.) Nissan needs to unveil the NISMO Micra, asap!

have you heard the recent rumblings about OPEC"s deal with Russia for yet ANOTHER agreemtn (which will fail ofc....see prisoner's dilemma)?

i just wonder how long the relatively low gas prices will continue....this is ALOT of trucks and SUVs being sold to a debt ridden middle class.....

It's a good question! I bet more Micras would be sold if gas was more expensive.

But I have a feeling that gas prices are going to stay relatively flat for the foreseeable future. If OPEC actually delivers on its pledge to freeze or cut its "easy" production, that will raise prices just enough to make it feasible for U.S. and other countries (eg. us too) to bring more of their "expensive" oil production back online (fracking, oil sands).

Just look at the U.S. oil rig count: with oil stabilizing in the $40's this year, the reversal of the crash in the rig count has already started.

The big question mark is always for the unpredictable events that mess with everyone's theories (outside factors like hurricanes, war, etc.).

Another big question is whether we're going to face a spike in prices a few years down the road because global exploration & development of new oil sources was radically slashed in the past 2 years. Meaning, production may not be ready if/when demand starts to exceeds supply again.

    ---

Meanwhile, I'm content not spending any more money on fuel than I need to. The price of oil doesn't really change my game plan.

truer words have never been spoke

oil geopolitics is fascinating. SA and Russia and Venezuela et al are just....f**kd, economically.

did you read about the fact that SA lost 27% of its foreign reserves in the last two years? unbelievable.

(ofc, nothing can compare to china losing half its reserves, but that's another story)

Yeah, SA's finances are crazy. I wasn't really aware of the scale of the problem until this latest price war. SA seems to have blinked first -- it seems like all they managed to do is encourage their competition to become leaner & meaner!

Considering the Toyota Yaris sales went form a peak of 40,602 in Canadian sales in 2008 to a paltry YTD of 7382 in 2016 maybe their design is just to radical for everyone and the fact they have the same power train since 1960 in it. ( I am joking about 1960 but you get the idea - updates have mostly been body). Toyota will have to make changes. Nissan needs the new model from Paris in NA in 2018. The USA on the other hand, have a greater sales number: 36,097

    Dec sales & year end

    OOF!

Something bad happened in December: 453 Micras sold.

That's the lowest month (not counting month 1, which was only partial). Sales of the Spark and Mirage also collapsed.

    Year over year for Micra:

    • 2014: 7,815 (partial year)
    • 2015: 11,909
    • 2016: 9,896

Overall, 2016 was Nissan Canada's best ever year:

Nissan announced today the Nissan Group set an all-time annual sales record with 134,153 total Canadian sales in 2016 - an increase of 3.2 per cent over 2015. This marks four years of consecutive annual sales growth for the Nissan Group in Canada.
