Another record month for Nissan:
http://nissannews.com/en-CA/nissan/c...canadian-salesNissan Group today announced monthly Canadian sales of 13,205 units, an increase of 1.7 per cent over last year and the best sales month ever in the company’s history. This sales achievement marks 34 consecutive months of record sales for the Nissan Group in Canada. Nissan brand sales increased 1.6 per cent with 12,169 units sold, setting a new all-time sales record.
Micra soldiers on with sales for the month just at the average - 934 - yet still dominates the competition.
Also noteworthy:
- Micra milestone: passed 25,000 total deliveries in May!
- Versa Note outsold Micra last month at 981. That's a big jump from 649 in April. That is very unusual -- the last time Note outsold Micra was August 2014.
Maybe Nissan is making a conscious strategy to up-sell people from the Micra to the Note, and that's why my brand new local Nissan dealership has 2x as many Notes as Micras? Last year, the Micra outsold the Note 11,909 to 9120, so it doesn't make sense to stock so many Notes vs. Micra, unless there's a new strategy in place (or they can't get enough Micras?).
- Chevy Spark had its 2nd best ever month with 400 sold. It seems GM's decision to join the $10k fight with Micra and Mirage seems to be having an effect. Spark was still in 3rd place in May just behind Mirage, but it might start to outsell the Mirage some months this year.
- Mitsubish Mirage has just started selling a sedan version. I doubt it will sell very well in Canada though. First, you can't get a base one for $10k, and second, remember that Nissan cancelled the slow selling Versa sedan here and replaced it with the Micra because Canadians don't buy small sedans.
And to conclude... a new graph from the stats nerd...

Another banner month for Nissan in Canada:
http://nissannews.com/en-CA/nissan/c...canadian-salesNissan Group today announced monthly Canadian sales of 14,132 units, an increase of 12.7 per cent over last year and the best sales month ever in the company's history. This sales achievement marks 35 consecutive months of record sales for the Nissan Group in Canada.
Micra deliveries: 976.
That's down a little bit compared to last June, but still a commanding lead vs. the competition: Mirage = 256; Spark = 336. I think the new Spark is taking some market share... last June, GM only sold 93 of them. Get this: in the U.S., June was the Spark's best ever month @ 6559 deliveries!

A bump in the road for Nissan? I think this is the first month since the Micra first went on sale that the company hasn't reported yet another a year-over-year sales increase or record. July was down 8% vs. last year.
http://nissannews.com/en-CA/nissan/c...canadian-sales
Micra: 803 sold, down vs. last month & last July.
It's a similar story with the Mirage. But the Spark saw another sales increase... yet it's still only half of Micra's sales.

With 980 sales, Micra turned in another decent month.
It's still killing both the new Spark and the revised Mirage. (Sales chart updated in post #1)
Canadians avoided the last gen. Spark like the plague, but they seem to like this one a lot more (or maybe GM is getting more fleet sales). It's pulled up into nearly a tie with the Mirage for the year-to-date total, but sales appear to be tapering off fairly quickly.
I've seen 4 new Sparks driving in my neighbourhood in the past couple of months. I've never seen that many Micras or Mirages locally. Of course there's been a GM dealership here since the stone age, but Brockville's Nissan dealer just opened recently. The nearest Mitsu store is in Ottawa.

I stumbled across this tidbit about India. Interesting point of comparison -- sales of the Micra are comparable to Canada:
http://indianautosblog.com/2015/01/n...details-163326domestic (Indian) sales haven’t really reached expected numbers. Last year (2015), Nissan sold an average of 705 units per month of the Micra (Micra Active and Micra) which is lower-than-industry volumes for a premium hatch available with petrol and diesel options.

Nissan's Canadian sales are down a little (-2.1%) overall vs. last September (source), but the Micra did OK:
- 921 Micras. Down from last month, but up from July.
- 226 Mirages.
- 596 Sparks (should know numbers tomorrow).

it's interesting: i'd imagine most people would prioritize ride/creature comfort over slightly sporty handling , which means id thought they'd gravitate towards sparks eventually...is the micra's first mover advantage that meaningful? or something else going on?
I think Nissan nailed it in the marketing department and they got first mover advantage and tons of media coverage with the killer $9998 base price. The Micra Cup idea was also genius, guaranteeing the car stayed in the media this summer even with no significant changes for the 2016 model year.
But the Spark numbers are in, and it just had its best month ever: 596 sold last month. That puts Spark ahead of Mirage in year-to-date sales for the first time.
GM of course has the most dealerships, so if the company decides it really wants to promote & sell the car, it will. I am definitely seeing more and more new Sparks on the road in my small city. I hardly ever saw the previous version of it.
Something else to keep in mind: we don't know how many sales from any company are to fleets vs. individuals. Some months, the companies make big sales to rental companies and the like.
