The silver lining to this.... We now know to immediately open that panel and rust proof it asap.

That metal looks like it is bare metal.

What's the corrosion warranty of the Micra? Maybe it would cover this?

Thanks for posting those pics, caspiansea. This will help other owners.

Thats a lot of rust.. Now I wonder how it got in there in the first place and why coudlnt it escape.. But I think I might know the culprit. Rear defroster. I know mine when its turned on, sometimes little droplets will fall down the window. And Id bet thats where it ends up.

Caspian, I think you might have saved us all a lot of headaches in the future. I think Ill be having a look in my tailgate and bombing the hell out of it with grease to keep the condensation out.

Gonna go so far as to say that if you take the 3 bolts out and disconnect the lock bar (with the yellow clip #10) and the #1 cable connecting the assembly will probbaly come out. Take that into the dealer and see thier opinion.

Failing that, take it out, separate 3 and 2, soak it in oil overnight and scrape the rust off with a wire brush, then grease the hell out of it.

Oddly enough the manual even indicates to grease that part.

Howie to the rescue with an exploded diagram!

    ---

Given the amount of corrosion on the latch mechanism, I wonder if the lock itself was even seized.

Easy enough to tell if you disconnect the rod (part #10 in the second diagram) and then try the key.
