Micra Cup rookie driver rollover & recovery story (video)

One driver in last season's Micra Cup dove into the series as a rookie -- a regular guy who always wanted to try racing and saw the Micra as the best way to get into the sport.

Unfortunately, his pre-season training ended suddenly with a single-vehicle rollover:

(I did not know you could roll a car without physically "tripping" it over an obstacle, but it appears it's definietly possible with (1) super sticky slick racing tires, (2) exactly the wrong kind of fishtailing pendulum motion, and (3) a somewhat tall and narrow car.)

The driver wasn't hurt, but the car (not sponsored) was a write-off. Adding insult to injury, he hadn't even run a race in it yet! So what does he do? To say he was dejected is an understatement.

The Truth About Cars has posted a heartwarming account about what happened next.

Holy Crap, that was short lived fun. I'm glad he's ok. Looks like he tried to recover to the right after being on the edging as it swerved him to the left. I guess at that speed, a quick turn to recover was too fast and over he went. wow.

Yeah, I could not figure out why he lost traction in the first place. You think he got physically bumped by the rumble/berm/edging (what's the right name for that)? Then did he lift off the throttle?

I'm not an expert at this, but hitting that edging was the start, it seemed to pull him in to the left, leaving the back end veering to the right, and I'd expect he eased up on the throttle when being in that situation. When I watched it again, him turning to the right to get out of that, was too much and flip.

I thought that the Micra cup cars were different? How was he able to run a Micra S? I can only imagine he swapped the parts with the Micra cup car?

All the Micra Cup cars are just the basic Micra S + roll cage, racing slicks, safety equipment & a few other mods.

First of all.. He was going thru a "S" turn or chicane at about 120-140km/h
Pre loading the driver side then the passenger side.

Whilst loaded on the passenger side ( with weight transfer from last turn )
He hits the rumble strips with the driver side tires.

It doesn't look like much, but those are plenty high curbs.

He 2 wheels it for a split second and forces the recovery.

But the driver side is now taking all the weight transfer, and unloading the passenger side springs ... While sideways.

The cup car is more top heavy then a stock one.

But still.. Note to self.. Avoid the rumble strip...
this does happen in video games with this car, given the right conditions.
But you could just as easily find a rwd car wrapped around a tree, given the right conditions.

I bet they disable those features for racing.

They might even disable ABS in some conditions. Otherwise "in a spin, 2 feet in" may not work properly.
