Micra helps make a birch bark canoe!

    Anybody remember this pic?

(From thread: DIY: Turning your Micra into a micro cargo van... rear seat removal &nbsp

2 summers ago, I helped a retired friend strip birch bark from a ~50 foot tree that a farmer had cut down (farmer was thinning trees out of his sugar maple grove).

This happened to be during the week when Nissan had loaned me a Micra SR automatic, so I took the opportunity to put it to work!

(And in case you're wondering, the load was very light (maybe 30 lbs), and very secure. I just had to be careful when making tight turns with such a long tail. )

Well, my friend has finally been working on his canoe this fall/winter. It's coming along nicely:

It's being made with all natural ingredients: bark, spruce root for the stitching, cedar gunnels & ribs, spruce gum boiled with fat to be used as the sealant.

There's enough bark left over that I could make one for myself, but I've got so many projects lined up I'm not sure if I'm going to take it on. We'll see.

What a beautiful project man. Love seing things like this. Will it be donated to a museum, or actually used on the water?

He doesn't spend much time on the water any more, aside from when I take him and his wife out for a sail. This canoe is more of a bucket list project.

Though I'm sure it will be paddled a little bit. I have definitely been conscripted (several times!) to help him get it down to the river when it's ready to go for a paddle. After that, I'm not sure what his plans are.

I'll try to remember to post pics of the maiden voyage.

This weekend the canoe got its second car ride (in a much more finished state), although not in/on a Micra this time:

Here's my friend and me taking it out for the first time. Sea trials on the St. Lawrence!

You couldn't wipe the grin off my friend's face! He's wanted to make a canoe for 60 years, and he finally did it. Half a dozen people came over to talk to him about it when we were putting it in.

Other than needing a bit more waterproofing around the stern stitching, its first paddle was a success.
