    Sound insulation in roof

    Hey all,

Other than the "RPM weirdness", another thing I wonder about the Micra.. it seems to me that there's no sound insulation on the roof of the car. I'm not complaining here.. it's more of an observation and am wondering if it's just me thinking this or that there is actually less insulation in the roof.

I could actually hear the rain drops when they fall from overhead objects or if it rains hard and hits the roof. I thought of it again when I got a car wash a few days ago.. It was so loud and I thought that the car would get pushed by the power of the car wash :-)

So is the Micra noisier compared to other cars when in car wash or big droplets of water or hard rain hits the roof? I'm not sure since this is my first car with a cochlear implant (so I can hear again!).

    thanks!

I got a good chuckle at this.. Yes.. It is louder when things tap the roof. If you want another weird experience, drive with the rear seats down- you can hear everything there too.

Lol, ya it's louder then I expected to. There is probably no insulation just the liner.

the sound when you flip the visor back up is definitely the sound of no dampening between the headliner and the outer skin.

Not just in the Micra, it was also noticeably loud in the Nissan Altima I had as a loaner while waiting for my Micra.

In our culture obsessed with absurd excess, the Nissan Micra is my counterculture car of choice.

^ Yup! I actually laughed the first time I heard that noise and made a point of demonstrating it to people.

Sounds transmitted in the roof are far more pronounced in the Mitsu Mirage - several auto journalists even commented on these exact scenarios: car wash, rain & flipping up the visors.

FYI, the funky design on the Micra's roof is meant to minimize the problem by stiffening the panel:

Of course they could have added an insulation layer/spray coating, but that adds weight & cost. Money money money!
