Writer Richard Russell indirectly points out the cleverness of Nissan adding the irresistable $9998 base Micra S into the press fleet after everybody has already done reviews on the SV & SR.

Most press vehicles supplied by manufacturers for evaluations such as this are loaded to the gills with every conceivable option. Not this one!
Result: a second round of media exposure!

Not surprisingly, like so many others he finds lots to like about the car:

Pros:

- sensible ergonomics, way better than entry level cars of days gone by
- comfy seating (I disagree on that -- the angle of the height adjustable SV/SR cushion is much better than the S's)
- capable of impressive fuel economy
- light weight makes it feel responsive
- decent suspension makes "this little devil a bit sporty"
- clutch is light; short shifter throws (really?)

Cons:

-
gearing: 3000 RPM at highway speeds is buzzy and hurts fuel economy
- notchy gearbox (really? I found it fine. Maybe because it's a press fleet car that gets whipped?)
- stability in crosswinds
- the step up to an automatic transmission is steep ($3300, because it's bundled with A/C & cruise)

Overall:

The Nissan Micra S is a cheap and cheerful little thing... If money is tight and you stick to basics, you can get a new car with full factory warranty that is a ton of fun to drive for less than $11,500 before taxes.
