Ontario version of Micra Cup coming?
Gossip from a Canadian motorsports blog:
Even though it hasn't even started yet (first race is in 2 weekends), apparently Nissan has been getting inquiries about expanding the series beyond Quebec.
Quote:
“If we want to keep the costs down, we cannot ask people in Ontario to race three times a year in Quebec and vice versa,” [Didier Marsaud, Project Manager for Micra Cup at Nissan Canada] explains. “We’ll add lots of costs.
“The idea — if we go for it — would be to have two cups, one in Quebec and one in Ontario, and at the end of the year do a main event with maybe the 15 better Ontario and Quebec cars.”
But no firm plans until they see how the Coupe Micra goes in Quebec first.

The Micra has mojo. Running it around a track proves that and casts the little econobox in a new light. Yes, it's a cheap car, but it's also spunky, and racing shows that there's more to lure customers than just a low price tag. On a wet day that was less than ideal for racing, I'm reminded that small cars can have big-time swagger on the track.

Good article about the Micra Cup from the Toronto Star
Senior autos writer Jim Kenzie draws parallels to the venerable Honda Michelin series, which also originated in Quebec in the 70's, and then spread all over.

The car is fun to drive. With just 109 horses in stock trim, it isn’t that fast. But the key to a good race is close competition.
Everyone will find someone to race with, and it should be a hoot to watch.
I’m predicting that at the Formula One Grand Prix weekend in Montreal, where the main event will surely be the usual Mercedes-led procession, the Micra Cup will provide by far the best entertainment.
