My Micra rant (2 year ownership)

Hi folks, been a while since my last post.

After owning a Micra for 2 years, i must say that i m overall dissatisfied with it. The following is my rant as an owner, you may not share the same experience or opinion.

I have a 2015 SR, it's currently 20 months old with 24k KM.

3rd month, the passenger window becomes loose, and makes clinging sound: Repaired under warranty.
6th month, driver seat belt buckle doesn't lock. Repaired under warranty
8th month, the same window problem started on the driver side window. Repaired under warranty.
10th month, passenger window becomes loose again, repaired under warranty.
meanwhile, the hood always makes a tic tic sound, that has been ignored (dealership said they can't do anything about it)
12th month, passenger door can't open, repaired under warranty (cable disconnected they say)
18th month, button to open driver seat window doesn't work .(repaired under warranty)
19th month, the cargo door can't open. repaired under warranty
2 days later, the cargo door can't open again. repaired under warranty again.
2 days later, cargo door windows popped as i was closing the driver door. (dealership says it's because as driver door closes, it pushes an air pressure that get pushed to the back, and the cargo door may pop.. )... well as a driver for almost 15 years, i have never heard of this... Not under warranty, but they repaired it for free.

Today... which is 2 days after, the cargo door can't close...... making an appointment for tuesday...

I have to say that i go to the garage more than visiting a pharmacy...

I am no expert, just an owner review. Beside the above list of repairs, Micra advertised itself as fuel efficient, but it really isn't: Micra (8.7L/100 KM city)..
Compared to Yaris (7.7L/100 KM city) which is bigger it uses about 12% more fuel.
Compared to Mazda 2 (7.0L / 100 KM city) Mazda 3 (8.5L / 100 KM) which is similar size. about 25% more fuel.
Compared to Versa (8.6 L / 100 LM city).... why does Micra use more fuel than Versa...
Micra 's fuel usage is compared to a SUV... RVR (8.6 L / 100 KM)....

Now, don't give me the lecture that "you bought the cheapest car in Canada, what do you expect..."
I still paid 18k $ for this, i have the right to complain and with 18k$ i am sure i can get a used car that is better quality... The Micra is simply cheaply built...

Planning to trade in my Micra after winter while it still worth something... I really regretted buying Micra.

i dont blame you. that was a pretty ****ty experience, and i agree that it's a cheap car.

i hope this is an isolated issue.

i encourage most people to buy CPO instead of brand new.

the drivers headlite burnt out...10 dollars at cad tire and super easy to replace.

warranty expires aug 2018

would i have been covered ?

No.... bulb is always a wear & tear item, unless it blow up within the 1 year

If you are in States, for sure this car qualify as a lemon, unfortunately.... Canada don't have such thing......

For your actual mileage, how many km/l did you get? Is your's stick or auto?
And trust me, today's gas mileage rating is way worst than before. Like my current car as an example, suppose to be 35MPG (around 15.5km/L) on highway crusing at 100km/h, I only get 9.6km/l.... so I really don't feel too surprised about it

And yes the price, Once you jump up to SV, around $16K on the road, not bad, but around 4K more, I can get a compact class car, instead of this, the sub-compact class..... And that's why I am still checking should I pull the trigger

mine says 7.7 L / KM , and that's because i drive 80% on highway . i don't understand

Also MrMicra... I purchased extended warranty on the car, the sales lady keep saying it's bumper to bumper... she even mentioned that the bulbs are included, it turns out to be false. it's wear and tear...

SuperTurbo, yes, i m pulling the trigger for sure, when checking in autotrader. My Micra is still worth 8k - 10k...

Looking to trade in for a ~80k KM ~6 years Impreza or RVR... probably have to add 1 or 2 k to it.

micra2080 - sorry to hear about all these problems. That's by far the worst case scenario I've seen from a Micra owner.

We've heard of some of those problems before (like the hatchback/cargo door not opening - due to corrosion of the mechanism in the other case, if I recall).

But the rear glass breaking is so strange! It's true that closing a door increases pressure inside the car, but there are flaps inside the cargo area (behind the rear wheels, behind the plastic bumper cover) that open and should let the pressure out. I'm SURE the Micra has those, so I don't buy the dealer's explanation.

I don't think Nissan Canada really promoted the car as being fuel-efficient. Right at the beginning we knew it was near the bottom for fuel consumption -- bigger engine, more power, short gearing (with the manual) and older technology for the automatic :

The fuel economy rating is the same for both cars with the manual transmission. But the Versa Note automatic is a CVT, which optimizes engine RPM for fuel economy. The Micra automatic is an older 4-speed design which is less efficient.

Again, the automatic in the RVR is a CVT, which optimizes RPM for fuel economy.

The manual Micra was not geared for economy, but for fun (thus the Coupe Micra Cup). It has a better power:weight ratio than each of the cars you mentioned. Thread: 2015 Micra vs competitors, power to weight ratio comparison

I meant *based on his experience*, not in general!

Based on what is here, it seems like an extreme case. Also with another member IMPLU comes to minds when it comes to extreme case as well. I agree with Metro that I don't believe the dealerships story and why they wouldn't cover the back window. I think that would have to be a lot of pressure in the whole cabin to have that window break. I know that lights are a wear and tear item but you would think that they would be covered under warranty. Maybe someone can explain to why they're not? I know they aren't like wipers to where you could leave them on all the time and the rubber would get thin. I understand why that wouldn't be covered under warranty.

When it comes to gas there is going to be a variable in that. When I did straight highway after my break-in was over I got 6.2. I average 7.2 in the summer. Now with winter tires I am getting 8.2/100 kms. I just think that fuel numbers are skewed and don't represent real world numbers.

He had a copule of minor trim issues and some REALLY bad luck..i have a 2015 honda fit with EXACTLY the same problems....only the front windshield cracked.....so i dont feel really bad for him..

i can understand his furstration.

I agree that it would be frustrating. I think about if it was more of engine or transmission issues I would be just mad. I've had other vehicles that were a lot more, cost wise and had bigger problems. I add the OP's problem to bad luck is all. If you look at all the members on the forum and no problems they had, Micra isn't all that bad. Could always be bad like the Mitsubishi Mirage. HA! Fog light on the stock when they're is no rear fog light.

Frustration, yeah.. the most frustrated part was that i was able to convince my wife to pull money from out tight budget to get a new car so we can also save on maintenance... it turns out that the Micra doesn't give us the confidence that it will not fall apart once the extended warranty is finished..

At least Mirage would allow us to REALLY save on fuel.

If you got a SR trim, I am very positive that you can ask more than 10K (with reasonable mileage)
Back just 2 months ago when I test drove a used one (SV trim, 2016 car with 60000km, rental) dealer want 9999$

I really do believe that your car's chassis or somewhere isn't straight (or at keep hitting the marginal spec) so that's why door can't open, and eventually when you slam the door, it cracked the glass. (If you try to use air force to pop the glass as the way they claim, the door which you are closing should be the first to blow due to your force + the air force)

May be you should try to talk to Nissan Canada and see what kind of resolution will they provide you.... (You never know will you hit a jackpot)

great... 7 years of no worrys....!

Traded in my Micra for 9000$ at a second hand shop. Added 4000$ for a 2012 RVR 4WD: 40k KM.

Asked for trade-in value at a Nissan dealership just to get an idea... they offered 8000$ for my 2015 SR with 25k KM...
Autotrader says between 9000 - 10000$ in quebec.

Can't wait to pick it up next week!

btw, test drive your RVR first. you may hated their CVT. It's very sluggish

not sure if it actually hold its value or not. 2 years, lost 45% already.

Tested the RVR, didn't have big expectation with CVT, because we tested the Mirage and Versa when we decided to buy Micra and the CVT or the 3 cylinder engine's noise was horribly loud. The Mirage was also choking when accelerate after stop signs... which is why we bought the Micra instead.

None of the above problem in RVR. drove it all the way to 140 km/hr, had no problems, the noise was bearable. Micra's plastic interior clacking sound is more annoying.
Tried on city street with pot holes, no problems.

i know i m going to miss Big White, because it's my first brand new car. but nothing else...

Hope you enjoy your new car. Friends of mine bought a used RVR also and are happy with it.

Since you've mentioned that, I've seen English Micra advertising that also promotes its "outstanding fuel economy"... without mentioning any numbers. Yes, it's outstanding ... if you trade a Ford F-150. :)

I'm curious how the consumption of your new RVR will compare to the Micra in the real world.

It's too bad your Micra was such a pain! Sorry to see you go.

Picked it up on Saturday, drove it for 100 km, mixed with 70% highway and 30% city on 2WD and with lots of things in the trunk. got 10.1 km / 100 L.
Will probably have a better rating in summer with summer tires.

So far, i feel that the money is well spent.
From Micra to RVR, the insurance is increased by 18$ / month, which would have been 32$ if it was a RAV4... apprently RAV4 get stolen more frequently in Montreal, that's what the insurance guy told me.

So nice to know that you're doing well with your current car now.

Sad to here...I currently own a 2016 and 2 2017, I also had a 2015, all cars leased by the way. My experience has been very good so far. The ONLY problem I had was on my 2016 from new started leaking water from the driver side "A" pillar. It was an easy fix (5 min) in total, the water drain hole was plugged. Very satisfied for what the price of the car is, not expecting too much but very satisfied with the quality at this price point.
